CORE Program Manager

• About Me:
Born into a Marine Corps Family, I went to 12 different schools before sixth grade. Dad was in the Korean War when I was born in Hancock New York (and if you know your dates, you can now figure out my age!!) I graduated from UCLA with a degree in history, married and moved to Pittsburgh for my husband to attend medical school.

I was hired by TPF&C (now known as Towers Perrin) to work in executive compensation and soon moved to AM International (they have the original patent on those old fashioned credit card imprint machines) in Personnel Administration. After 3 years in Los Angeles, we decided to strike out on our own, be entrepreneurial (!) and start the first solo Pediatric office in Sandpoint, Idaho. Managing the Pediatric office, birthing two children, running PTAs, serving on site councils and school boards and running an after-school enrichment class program kept me occupied for the next few years!

When the life of a solo practitioner in rural Idaho became too much a burden on our family, we moved to a much larger city – La Grande, OR! I became the Director of Development for Grande Ronde Hospital within 3 months of arriving and was the Foundation Director, Auxiliary Liaison, Public and Community Relations Director for almost 10 years. My interests have always been with rural communities and their residents and I was drawn to RDI and the work that they do.

• What I do at RDI:
Initially I was hired as the Fund Development Director, but was given the opportunity to take on the CORE grant program in June 2006. As this Kellogg grant was the first project I worked on at RDI, I felt like I was “coming home”!

• State where I was born:
New York

What I wanted to be when I was 8 years old:
I dreamed of being a ballet dancer when I was young, but once I graduated from introductory ballet into toe shoes, it was evident that this was not going to be my chosen field!

• Interesting previous job(s) I've held:
I picked strawberries on a motorized “berry picker” for two summers during middle school (picture being face down on a massage table, moving 1 mile per hour and picking into a flat attached to the table by your side)

• One of my personal goals for :
Learn how to sell on Craigs List and e-bay – I just have too much “stuff”.

• A place I want to visit at least once in my lifetime:
I would like to travel to Italy and plan to do so with my college roommates on our 60th birthdays.

• My favorite book and why:
My favorite book is “Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver because I love her writing style – “Tortilla Curtain” by TC Boyle is a close runner up.

• My favorite board game:
My favorite board game is Lord of the Rings “RISK” because the last time I played it I beat my son after 6 grueling hours and swore I would never ever play RISK again….and I won’t!

• The coolest thing someone has done for me:
Given me the chance to be a Mom and have two wonderful children – and I would have to thank my great husband for that!
