Mary Truchot
Human Resource and Finance Coordinator

• About Me:
I was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming. Growing up we had to travel five hours to Denver Colorado to buy our school clothes as there was really no place to shop in town. My parents were diehard Denver Bronco fans so we usually went to a pre-season football game and stayed at a round hotel near Mile High Stadium. I grew up going camping and loved being outdoors. I remember in the summertime driving down the road with my geologist father wildly gesturing out the window as he told us about rock formations, hillside structure and such.

I first moved to Oregon when I transferred to Oregon State University to finish the last two years of college. I had never been to Oregon when I chose the school and I am not sure my family really believed me when I told them I was moving to Oregon! Once here, it didn’t take me long to fall completely in love with Oregon. After being away for over nine years, it’s wonderful to be back. Even though I was born in Wyoming, I claim Oregon as my home and it is definitely the place I want to raise my kids.

I graduated from college with a double major in Human Resources and Business Management along with a minor in Psychology. The majority of my professional experience is in the coffee industry. And yes I admit that I can’t get through the day without a few cups of good, strong coffee! My career started after college with a part-time barista position when Starbucks Coffee opened their first store in Portland’s Pioneer Square. My “part-time” job soon had me working 65 hours a week and it wasn’t very long before I was managing my own Starbucks store. I had always loved coffee and so I felt like I had fallen into a perfect job for me especially after traveling to Costa Rica on a coffee buying trip! The sweet songs of the coffee pickers stay with me still to this day. Later in my career, I was Division President for Moxie Java International which was the retail division of White Cloud Coffee in Boise, Idaho. Other past jobs found me managing a wholesale beer/wine distributor, being operations manager for a staffing company and working as an employment specialist for the State of Wyoming.

• What I do at RDI:
I am the Human Resource and Finance Coordinator. One part of my job has me administering payroll, benefits, and human resources policies, procedures, and programs. And for the rest of my time, I oversee administrative expenditures, maintain the banking and insurance relationships, and oversee property tax and 1099 reporting.

• State where I was born:
Wyoming!

What I wanted to be when I was 8 years old:
When I was about three years old, I declared that I was going to be a nurse when I grew up – no ifs, ands or buts about it! Somewhere around sixth grade, I decided I didn’t want to be the nurse, but instead wanted to be the doctor. Believe it or not, it was in my second year of pre-med that I realized medicine was not the career for me!

• Interesting previous job(s) I've held:
Provided coffee for the Idaho Woman’s Fitness Celebration (5K run/walk) event participants. For two days before the actual event, we set up a mobile espresso cart in the convention center in downtown Boise and gave away thousands of free lattes or mochas to the ladies that came down to register for the event. Beginning at 4am on the morning of the event, we started brewing gallons and gallons and gallons of coffee to be ready for the crowds at the finish of the race. This weekend always left me feeling more tired than any other time in my life, but with a huge sense of accomplishment when our crew was able to overcome a lot of obstacles (usually equipment or power failures) and contribute to a successful event.

• One of my personal goals for :
I have hundreds, well really more like thousands, of digital pictures that I have taken of my three kids and a huge goal for 2008 is to organize these pictures, do their baby books and start scrapbooks.

• A place I want to visit at least once in my lifetime:
Since I was about 10 years old, I have dreamed of visiting Scotland. I grew up listening to a number of relatives on my mother’s side of the family talk about Scotland. The stories that have stayed with me are the ones my mom told of summers spent in Scotland as a child.

• My favorite book and why:
It is really, really hard to pick a favorite book! I am really not happy if I am not in the middle of a book, usually a mystery or suspense book. Currently, I would say my favorite books are the Harry Potter series. It was great fun to read and then to be able to discuss it all with my husband, family, and friends. Of course, having to wait and anticipate the next book in the series just added to the fun.

• My favorite board game:
My favorite game ever is cribbage which is more a card game than a board game. These days, I am more likely to play Caribou by Cranium with my 4 year old daughter which is a lot of fun.

• The coolest thing someone has done for me:
My mother-in-law moved to Jackson, Wyoming to help out when my twins were born. She took care of my older daughter while we spent a week in the hospital with the twins after they were born and she helped out when they came home. Having her keep me company those first few months with the twins really saved my sanity! After I returned to work, she was the twin’s nanny for several months until we moved to Oregon. I am very grateful for her help and glad my kids (and I) got to spend that time with their Grandma.
